Introduction

Many educational software companies have recognised the influence and value of games. For developers, computer and video games can be useful in a variety of ways - either as a source of ideas when designing the controls and interfaces of new software, or as examples of how to use certain techniques to engage and motivate users/learners. Furthermore, the underlying technology of products used to create games (such as 3D engines) may be reused in educational products.

Computer games and videos can also be of direct use in the classroom, although different issues need to be addressed before doing so and it is likely that fitting most commercial games into the structure of lessons would present more challenges than benefits. Moreover, like film and television, games are developed for a variety of ages - some will contain unsuitable content or themes for children at school.
