Commercially-Available Educational Games

Historically, the word games have been used to suggest a pastime of a trivial, if fun, endeavor. It is for this reason that some educators frown when they hear the word games and imagine frivolous time wasted play that serves only to entertain and certainly not educate to any significant degree. As commercial games are becoming a major influence in children, software companies are taking this software and developing commercial games available for education.

One setback with commercial games is that there is very little flexibility for the environment in which the student may learn. For example, some may argue that “Grand Theft Auto” helps teach players how to think creatively rather than being forced to follow a set path, thus giving the player the freedom to explore their identities, values, and ideologies. Whether or not this statement is true, one thing is for certain, a game like “Grand Theft Auto” would not be fit in an educational environment because of its violent and graphic nature. Although this may be an extreme case, it's extremely important for video games to fit the environment in which they were designed for. Commercial video games used for education are becoming a big hit whether to be used in schools or in the homes.
