The city of Hull underwent an extensive re-branding in 2003 in a drive to bring new investment and regeneration opportunities to the city. As part of that exercise, two new websites were commissioned along with a custom-built mailshot management system.
The websites were designed to fit seamlessly into the overall suite of materials supporting the Hull brand, with its bold colours and distinctive 'cog' logo, designed by brand masters Wolff Olins.
I worked as part of a small team on both websites, where I was responsible for the bulk of the web development plus design work on the secondary pages. The site was built in ASP.NET and included a custom-built news and events facility to allow the client to update these sections of the site on a regular basis as well as streaming video and Flash content. I also built a custom mailshot system, allowing the client to send out marketing e-mail to visitors that had registered on the website. In addition, I acted as client liaison, gathering requirements and dealing with the client's enquiries.
The sites were live from 2008, after which they were merged under a new redesign, resulting in the new Hull Forward site, which still maintains many of the design elements of the original sites.
